Tooling is the backbone of plastic injection molding. Without a proper tool design, your plastic part would never scale up properly. A quality tool design can save you enormous amounts of time and money during production.

What is tooling?

Tooling, also known as a mold, defines the negative space where molten plastic resin is injected to craft a part. Achieving both high quantity and quality parts necessitates meticulous attention to tooling. Due to the complexity of tool design and construction, creating effective tooling demands a substantial capital investment and a sufficient lead time.

The tooling design process initiates during the prototype development phase. Utilizing cutting-edge techniques such as 3D printing, cast urethane, and machining, we create prototype tools. These low-volume prototypes play a crucial role in troubleshooting, refining, and validating the tooling design during pilot production. While this initial step may appear redundant, it proves instrumental in identifying and rectifying potential errors in the manufacturing and assembly process. Addressing issues early on significantly reduces both time and cost implications in later stages.


The process of producing mold tooling involves several key steps:

A detailed design of the mold is created based on the specifications of the part to be produced. Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software is often used in this phase.

The material for the mold is selected based on factors such as the type of production process, the material of the parts to be molded, and the expected production volume.

The mold design is translated into a physical mold through precision machining processes like milling, turning, and electrical discharge machining (EDM). CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines are commonly used for high-precision mold machining.

Depending on the material used, the mold may undergo heat treatment processes to enhance its hardness and durability.
